Turtles at JFK

Turtle at JFK

On June 29th, several flights were delayed at New York’s JFK airport as more than 150 diamondback turtles were removed from runway 4. They were crossing the tarmac to get to a sandy area where they could lay eggs. Apparently this happens every year! Who knew there were turtles in Queens?

Ritz-Carlton just opened a new hotel in Hong Kong and it is high! Reaching over 1400 ft into the sky, it is the tallest hotel in the world. It also holds a spa, a rooftop bar and an infinity pool that will let you swim to the edge of the building.

Delta Introduces Economy Comfort

Filed under: Main Blog,Travel News — alena @ 7:00 pm

Starting June 1, Delta will be adding a new Economy Comfort class to many of its international flights. Seats will cost an additional $80-$160 each way and will offer up to 4 more inches of legroom and recline 50% more than standard coach. You also get early boarding and free premium beverages. I like the premium economy trend and hope it continues. It’s a good compromise between coach and first for those times that you just want a little more space.

Amex and Continental Split

I love American Express but it’s upsetting that they are about to lose another great partner, Continental Airlines. It’s not a total shock since Continental left the Skyteam alliance but it’s still a blow to those that collect points for free tickets as it leaves us with one less option. September 30, 2011 will be the last day you can transfer Membership Rewards points into your OnePass account, so plan accordingly.

Delta Miles Don’t Expire

In a bold move to improve their Skymiles program, Delta has eliminated frequent flier mile expiration effective January 1, 2011. That means if your miles were set to expire on or after that date, they no longer will. It’s nice to have one less thing to worry about when it comes to tracking miles, but it’s also worth noting that miles will always decrease in value over time due to increased award rates and fees. So use them when you can!

Smoking Up in the Air

We all know that smoking isn’t allowed on planes these days but Ryanair has come up with an interesting solution to cater to customers looking for a nicotine fix. For $10/pack, passengers can purchase smokeless cigarettes that will calm their cravings without posing a danger to fellow travellers. Obviously smoking wouldn’t exist in a perfect world, but in this world it’s still part of our reality. Smokers are often very anxious about flying and I think this move will give them some peace making travel a better experience not only for them, but also for those around them.
