Flying Today: Some Recent Observations
The airline industry has suffered in the past year due to the down economy and they have definitely been cutting back. A couple of things I’ve noticed recently:
- Airlines are cancelling flights left and right. I had two flights cancelled in the past month and was put on new flights with drastically different times. In both cases, the new times didn’t work for me and I had to cancel and book new flights. Although they don’t advertise this fact, most airlines will give you a refund on a non-refundable ticket if they change your flight time to one with at least a 90 minute difference. This has been very frustrating to me because I try to fly the same airlines to collect miles and earn status but when they cancel the flight times I need I often have to change airlines.
- All vegetarian meals are created equal. Although I’m a lacto-ovo vegetarian and this option is offered by most airlines for a special meal it seems that, for the past year, all vegetarians are given the same vegan/Indian meal of vegetable curry. No matter what airline I fly on, I’ve gotten the same dish over and over. I understand they are streamlining, but I wish they wouldn’t pretend to offer something they really don’t. Since I personally don’t like vegetable curry, I stopped ordering the special meal. Luckily, most flights have a pasta option these days.
