Chihuly at RISD

Remember my post about the excellent Rhode Island School of Design Museum? When I visited, the school was building a new gallery called the Chace Center and it opened to the public yesterday. The center’s inaugural exhibition is a collection by renowned glass artist and RISD alumnus and teacher, Dale Chihuly. Chihuly is famous for creating colorful, large scale hand blown glass sculptures. You may have seen his work in upscale hotels like the Bellagio in Las Vegas and Atlantis in the Bahamas. Also on display at the Chace are glass works by students of Chihuly who studied under him at RISD. The exhibit runs through January 2009.

  2. Alena – We have his work here at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco right now. It’s amazing to look at, like an ocean floor recast in glass. I don’t know how they talked him into exhibiting in an earthquake zone, but if you’re out this way it’s not to be missed!

  3. Ali, I missed the botanical garden exhibit when it was in NY so I’m going to try to make this one in Providence.

I knew about the exhibit in San Fran and the whole earthquake thing never occured to me, but now that you bring it up TravelMuse, that is pretty funny!
